About Euthanasia
The Rainbow Bridge

If you have recently lost a pet, all of us at Lone Peak offer our condolences. We have all lost beloved pets, and though each experience is unique, we know how hard it is to go through.

We offer our deepest sympathy.

There is no harder time than when your pet dies. Whether your pet has died at home, simply disappeared, or been euthanized, the grief can be intense. Pets occupy a special place in our lives. They are not people, but are often considered family. They are always there waiting for us at home, offering unconditional love as only pets can.

The emotions that the loss of a pet can bring up are very difficult to bear. People are often surprised at the depth of their grief, and wonder if their feelings are normal. It is normal to feel very sad at the loss of a pet. Feelings of grief may be mixed with feelings of guilt, anger, and hopelessness. These feelings may persist for a long time.

It may help to express your feelings in a letter, a poem, or other creative act of rememberance of your pet. Holding a funeral for you alone or for friends and family can not only help you express your feelings, but can allow the people who care about you to offer support. Pet owners have planted trees, donated to animal welfare organizations, and created scrapbooks in memory of their beloved pets. Do not be afraid to express your feelings, because it will help you to move through your grief.

Euthanasia is an especially difficult decision for any pet owner to make. The question, "Is this the right time?" is the hardest to answer. Some pet owners feel that they should have waited longer before euthanizing their pets, and some owners feel that they waited too long before making the decision. Keep in mind that hindsight is always 20/20, and know that euthanasia is a humane act. Relieving suffering may be the last act of kindness that we offer our pets, though it is the hardest.
